Mission & Values

Our mission is to make Islamic art and history accessible to all. We’re committed to using our academic expertise and lived experiences to bring accurate knowledge about global Islamic art, history, and cultural heritage to wide public audiences. We believe in the importance of collaborative, interdisciplinary approaches to address structural inequities in our knowledge and memory institutions, and to address problematic and persistent misconceptions about Muslims and global Islamic histories and civilization.

Our values are inclusion, collaboration, and respect

About our values

Inclusion | Collaboration | Respect

These are the values on which the Lab was founded, and which we strive to uphold through our work. What does this mean in practice?

  • We strive to make academic knowledge about Islamic art and history accessible outside the academy.

  • We do not use or condone the use of generative AI in our work, as a general rule. We understand the utility of this new technology. Our decision is based on concerns about the ethical, moral, and environmental issues raised by generative AI, and bias and inaccuracies in AI-generated material, including visual representations.

  • We value diverse teams and working collaboratively to create inclusive experiences and resources.

  • We believe in equitable pay for all and we do not request or provide unpaid labour.

    • We use Creative Scotland’s Fair Pay Rates of Guidance for creative industries collaborations

    • We pay the Real Living Wage (at minimum)

      OR

    • In lieu of paid remuneration we offer our team

      • Mentoring and advising to support their career and educational goals

      • Opportunities for professional development training through fee waiver on Academy short courses

      • Course credit (through university internship and work placement programs) on a limited basis

Recognising that digitisation and heritage come with significant ethical implications, our work is committed to the thoughtful application of new technologies. We are guided by the Creative Informatics Ethics Statement, which encourages best practices and thoughtful reflection on work with data and new technologies in the creative industries.
