About This Course

Arabic calligraphy is one of the most distinct and enduring arts of Islamic civilization. In this introductory workshop, Hatem Arafa guides participants, starting from basic letter forms to more advanced written compositions using the Diwani script.

We're pleased to offer this special DLIVCC edition in English (Arafa's courses are normally taught in Arabic).

These sessions will not be recorded and will require a minimum of 4 registered participants to run. Participants receive a certificate upon completion of the class.

  • What i enjoyed the most is seeing how alive a plain text can be when written via Diwani script.

The first time I encountered Hatem’s work was in Global Centre for Islamic Arts week. I was fascinated as I have always wanted to learn Diwani script. I reached out and he promised to let me know when his class was open. And he did!

I registered and took the course and I must say it was great. His teaching was relaxed and hands-on. Corrections were made for every student on the live class and we could actually see our progress. We didn’t just learn the script, he gave us a bit of the history and origin of the Diwani script.

Overall, it was an amazing workshop and I came out of it able to write letters in diwani and even had a brand new signature in diwani script.

I would recommend Hatem’s classes to anyone interested in learning the basics of Diwani Script.
